Breaking Through
On that day
something more broke
than towers.
Stone hearts cracked
like a nut
and tears
watered the seed of love.
One who would have stolen
the day before
reached out his hand
to help.
Strangers
became
friends.
Heroes died
in collapse,
while panic
did not reign at all.
The lines
to give blood
were long and patient.
In the dust
she tied a yellow ribbon
to her building.
When next she looked
it had multiplied --
a row of yellow ribbons
in the dust.
On that day
something more broke
than towers.
And tears
watered the seed of love.
